Video: Almost scammed! Security Bank online banking scam call & fake rewards

Image
This is unrelated to librarianship but just a reminder and warning to be very vigilant about your bank account and personal details. There are so many scammers and fishy people nowadays who just want easy money. Stay safe. Someone who claimed to be from Security Bank (Philippines) said that there would be 'rewards' to be deposited in my account worth 5,000 pesos. The caller sounded so professional that I almost took the bait. Then, I received an OTP from Security Bank when I wasn't touching my online banking at all (account is not connected to online banking). The text message said that someone is trying to create an online banking account and log in. When the caller asked for the OTP, I realized it was a scam. She said she needed the OTP so that she can deposit the money. I ended the call, called Customer Service and reported the number and incident. I also went to the bank branch the next day to update my passbook and make sure there were no suspicious transactions. T...

6 years of blogging on Malditang Librarian: what I learned and future directions

Image
Malditang Librarian will be six years old on May 2022 (I posted my first blog entry in May 2016).  When I started the Malditang Librarian blog in 2016, my situation wasn't so great. I was unemployed and just resigned from my first job in another city. I was looking for another job and thinking of enrolling in graduate school, just to have something to do while looking for work. I was very disillusioned from my first job, and realized a lot of things from being pushed headfirst into the adult life. I had been writing online here and there, mostly for personal blogs when social media wasn't that popular. I started a blog in my first job to share board exam tips for aspiring librarians in the Philippines, which had the boring name "Library Logs." Then, in a sudden flash of inspiration, I thought of the name "Malditang Librarian" and I found it so... amusing. There's a common stereotype that librarians are not so nice, and that's a play on that. The nam...

PLDT, Smart fully restore communication services, complete fixes in Bohol and Negros Island post-Odette

Image
Network restoration in Danao, Bohol PLDT has fully restored its fixed services in Negros Island while its mobile services arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has fully restored its wireless services in Bohol after super typhoon Odette devastated the two provinces toward the end of 2021. Odette’s massive destruction had resulted in numerous fiber cuts, broken poles, and damage to cell sites in Bohol and southern Negros. PLDT and Smart engineers from neighboring regions were immediately deployed to these provinces to fast-track network restoration. One of the emergency response initiatives that immediately helped bring back communication services in Bohol was the use of Multi-equipment on wheels (MEOW), a portable cell site and satellite communications suite providing immediate communication support in lieu of the three collapsed Smart towers in the towns of Trinidad, Jetafe, and Danao. PLDT and Smart have also deployed Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging stations as communicatio...

PLDT restores 86% of its fixed line services and Smart restores 99% in Visayas, fast tracks last mile in Mandaue, Mactan, Bohol

Image
Despite the continued absence of commercial power in some locations and re-work due to clearing operations as well as incidents of cable theft, PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. have restored services by up to 99% for wireless customers and 86% for fixed customers in the Visayas, following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Odette. Ninety-nine percent of Smart’s wireless network has been restored, enabling call, text and mobile internet services.  Full restoration is expected in early March.  PLDT’s fixed network meanwhile is on catch up mode as extensive fiber cuts in areas such as Mactan and Mandaue have hobbled restoration work. Teams are also replacing the remaining copper connections with fiber optic cables. Some parts of Cebu and Bohol still face commercial power difficulties, accidental cuts due to ongoing clearing operations and fiber optic cable theft in Cebu, pushing back full restoration by March to mid-April. “In the meantime, we’re providin...
