History of Indexing Historical outline: development of Indexes and Indexing The first evidence of the systematic gathering and organizing of written records occurred in Sumer around 3,000 BC. Egyptian and Sumerian writings were done on clay tablets and papyrus. First systematic organization of written records occurred in Sumer around 3, 000 B.C.
