Church in Davao Oriental to digitize historical documents

Most Rev. Bishop Abel Apigo of the Diocese of Mati and ADDU EVP Bong Eliab. The San Salvador del Mundo Church in Caraga, Davao Oriental is digitizing its important historical documents. This project is made possible with a memorandum of understanding between the Diocese of Mati and the Ateneo de Davao University. The University's Archives will digitize these documents. The church is 137 years old and is considered the oldest Catholic church in Mindanao. It was established by the Jesuits in 1877 and finished in 1884. 19th century documents written by missionaries will be digitized, which covers 16 volumes and 2,500 pages. The documents include baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths, and financial accounts. These are considered valuable sources of historical and cultural information for the region. Commission on Human Rights creates eLibrary for disability rights

Commission of Human Rights (CHR) launched the Philippine Observatory on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities or PhORPD last July 16, 2021. This is an electronic library of data regarding the human rights of persons with disabilities in the Philippines. Data in the eLibrary is curated by specialists on disability rights. This is foreseen to be useful as a reference for stakeholders on developing policy and programs for persons with disabilities. According to the PhoRPD website, "In 2020, against the backdrop of uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Commission on Human Rights has initiated the development of the Philippine Observatory on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (a.k.a. PhORPD), in active collaboration with the six disability rights specialists, who represented the children with disabilities, persons with chronic/psychosocial disability, deaf/hard of hearing, with orthopedic impairment, speech impaired, and visual impaired. Army Engineers launch Children's Library in Northern Samar

Photo from RMN Tacloban on Facebook Philippine Army Engineers built a mini children's library in Allen, Northern Samar to promote reading for local children, the Aklatang Pambata ng Kawal Inhenyero (Army Engineers Children’s Library). The library is located in the Philippine Army's 543rd Engineer Construction Battalion camp. The group came up with the idea of creating a library during a feeding program for over 60 children living in Allen's Gawad Kalinga village. The library was completed last June 27, 2021. Aside from a reading area, the library also includes a playground. Six tablets are provided for the children's educational use. According to battalion commander Lt. Col. Vedasto Cabales, "As we implemented the feeding program, we [thought] of something that can help them learn and develop their reading habits even during the pandemic. IFLA to hold first ever online World Library Information Congress on August 17-19, 2021

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. They conduct the annual World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) which is considered to be the most "international" global library conference. For 2021, the WLIC will be entirely online on August 17-19. This is the first online WLIC for IFLA, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has affected travel worldwide.
