SEAFDEC AQD Iloilo Librarian and Centralians publish research paper on SAGE Journal

Once again, Daryl L. Superio, RL, MLIS, Senior Information Assistant in SEAFDEC AQD Library (Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center - Aquaculture Department) has published a research paper in Information Development, an information studies journal published by SAGE. His paper is entitled "The information-seeking behavior of aquaculture researchers at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center."

His co-authors are also Centralian teachers and librarians: Jessica B. Canaman, a Statistics professor; Janet P. Jaco, Central Philippine University - Elementary School Principal; and Dr. Melda L. Estember, professor for Library Science and Director of the CPU Henry Luce III Library. Mr. Superio is also an instructor for the Library and Information Science program of CPU.

Here is the abstract of the paper, and you can access it through this link. It was published online last January 22, 2018.

Abstract:
"Understanding the information-seeking behavior of library patrons is essential for the library to provide quality resources and services, and to satisfy its patrons’ information needs. A quantitative research was conducted to describe the information searching and using behaviors of the Filipino aquaculture scientists, researchers and research staff at the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/AQD). The study revealed that although the respondents find it useful to go to the library to get assistance from the librarian, and to browse and read current acquisitions related to their research, they visited the library infrequently. However, remote library services, especially email and phone services, were highly utilized. When searching for information, the Internet, mainly via search engines, was highly preferred rather than visiting the Library and using its online public access catalog (OPAC) or its databases. The combination of print and electronic formats was highly preferred when reading, rather than print only or electronic-only. The majority would print and save the retrieved electronic copy."

SEAFDEC-AQD Library is a well-known research library in Western Visayas and in the Philippines. They cater to the research and information needs of scientists and researchers in SEAFDEC AQD, Tigbauan. They are also open to the public for outside researchers. Their librarians have successfully published research in reputable journals. Follow their Facebook page for more information: @seafdecaqdlib.

As librarians, we should also be active in research. Through research, we can investigate trends and problems in the field and propose new developments. By aiming to publish research in credible professional journals, we are also improving the reputation of librarians as researchers as well. Publishing a research paper also counts in Continuing Professional Development in the new CPD Law. So we librarians should brush up on our research skills and try creating our own.

(Side note: As of now, I'm also trying to join and assist other librarians more experienced in research so I can have an idea how to do it. After my comprehensive exam for MLIS, I will also have to write my own thesis and conduct research.)
