Library sa Merkado now open in Iloilo Central Market

The Iloilo City Government opened its first Library sa Merkado ("Library in the Market") at the Iloilo Central Market this August 28, 2026.

The Library sa Merkado is a small collection of books which are free to read for market-goers. It is located at the 2nd floor, Dry Goods Section, open from Mondays to Fridays at 8 am to 5 pm. There are plans to extend the library hours and add similar small libraries in other public markets in the city.

Mayor Raisa Trenas led the opening program and highlighted the importance of books for literacy, especially for children.

The project is a joint initiative of the Iloilo City Public Library, Technical Institute of Iloilo City, and Zonta Club of Iloilo Inc., providing market-goers and nearby communities with an accessible space to read, learn, and study.

The Iloilo City Government has plans to establish a library in every district and reading centers in barangays. They have also launched outdoor libraries in plazas, making a space for children and citizens of all ages to read, engage, and learn.
