How to get Library Card in the National Library of the Philippines

Library card from National Library of the Philippines

Disclaimer: I am not connected with the National Library of the Philippines and this is the process as of 2026, which may have changes in the future.

The National Library of the Philippines (NLP) is the country’s central repository of knowledge and cultural heritage. It houses more than a  million items, including books, periodicals, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and government publications. Among its most treasured holdings are José Rizal’s original manuscripts of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, the 1898 Declaration of Philippine Independence, and the original score of the national anthem Lupang Hinirang. These collections make the NLP not only a research hub but also a guardian of the nation’s historical memory and identity.

Situated along T. M. Kalaw Avenue in Rizal Park, Ermita, Manila, the library is easily accessible within the city’s cultural district. It is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. Its location within Rizal Park places it near other cultural landmarks such as the National Museum and the Rizal Monument, making it a central stop for those exploring Manila’s heritage.

Research and use of the National Library is free as long as you bring a valid government ID. Here's how to apply for a Library Card:

  1. Bring a valid ID and proceed to the application counter in the first floor.
  2. You will be asked to input your information and a photo of you will be taken.
  3. You have the option to get a free paper stub that serves as a library card, or a plastic library card that costs P100.

Personally, I would prefer getting the plastic card especially if you plan to visit the library regularly. Aside from their free library resources, clients can avail of free WiFi and study or work space.

However, you can also opt to keep the paper version of the card. I would recommend keeping it in a safe container like a plastic ID holder or have it laminated so it can last longer.

Why is the card needed?

Each library card will have a unique identification number and a corresponding bar code. This will be scanned every time you use the reading area and borrow reading materials.

This is for the Library to keep track of their library users, what services are being availed and what materials are being used.
