I’ve seen these mystery novels by Uketsu in bookstores, and people reading them. I was curious but not enough to buy it. So hiniram ko na lang sa kakilala ko!
If you like short, intriguing mysteries and horror stories this is for you. I would say that the writing is quite simple and sometimes it requires a certain suspension of disbelief (like how the narrator and his friend figures it out early on). But the ideas and how the books use certain unique elements make them compelling. For example, Strange Houses uses blueprints and house layouts, while Strange Pictures use drawings that my seem simple but are key to solving the mysteries.
Strange Houses is about ordinary-looking homes that conceal deeply disturbing architectural anomalies. The story follows a writer and an architect friend who analyze puzzling blueprints - featuring bizarre windowless rooms and mysterious doorless "dead spaces" - to unravel chilling family secrets and dark plots hidden within the building designs. This one CREEPED me out, sometimes I would be scared of the walls around me because of this book.
Strange Pictures is an interactive puzzle-mystery and psychological horror novel. It is structured around seemingly ordinary, childlike drawings - such as a pregnant woman’s online sketches, a child's apartment sketch, and a murder victim's final drawing. These eerie visuals hide dark secrets and chilling warnings that characters and readers must piece together to solve an overarching, sinister web of crimes. Not as creepy as Strange Pictures, but somewhat of a tragedy and an interesting psychological study.
I am planning to read his other work, Strange Buildings.
