UP Visayas Library to launch Institutional repository, conducts training-workshop

The University of the Philippines in the Visayas Library is set to launch an Institutional Repository. In line with this goal, the Library conducted a three-day training-workshop for library staff on January 3-5, 2023. Four trainers from SEAFDEC-AQD, Central Philippine University, and West Visayas State University conducted the training workshop.

The activity proceeded after the approval of Chancellor Clement C. Camposano. The Data and Information Services Program (DISP), co-proponent of this project, assisted in the maintenance of the server. Dr. Philip Ian P. Padilla, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, delivered a message during the opening program.

An Institutional Repository (IR) is a digital service that an academic institution can offer to the members of its community by providing an online warehouse that is designed to archive, manage, organize, preserve, and showcase the intellectual output of students, faculty, and staff to a broader audience. It also aims to make them more accessible, searchable, and retrievable online. With the repository, UPV publications, theses, and reports will be indexed and searchable on Google and Google Scholar.

An institutional repository is a kind of 'digital library' which houses the researches and publications of a university or academic institution. Research has been an important part of the academe and research output considered as one of the factors contributing to the quality of an institution.

CHED and other accrediting agencies are now looking at research publications and citations as one of the requirements needed for universities. An institutional repository can help in archiving, organizing, and disseminating these researches to a wider audience.

While institutional repositories are already existing in universities outside of the Philippines, only a few universities have their own repositories. This endeavor of the UP Visayas Library is a welcome addition to promote research and make local researches visible and usable globally.

In February 2021, Central Philippine University launched the first Institutional repository in the Visayas, BAHANDIAN. This repository is managed by the Henry Luce III Library. Aside from faculty researches, theses, and dissertations, the library is also on the process of digitizing old and out-of-print university publications of the university.

With more repositories from different organizations, library resources and researches are no longer just limited to a single library; but can be accessed by anyone who needs it.
